Compound Probabilities

Each time you flip a quarter, there’s a 1 out of 2 chance (eg: 50% probability) it will come up heads. But what’s the probability of the coin coming up heads 3 times in a row?

  • In general, compound probability = the product of each individual probability that the desired outcome is based on

  • 3 consecutive coin tosses of heads = 50% x 50% x 50% = 12.5% (or 1 out of 8)
